Wireless Adapter Disabled in Windows 7 Beta

I have been using Windows 7 for almost a month now and I am really impressed on the performance and reliability. For a beta product this is really awesome. The best part is that NO BLUE SCREENS from day oneJ.

Anyway the issue I was facing with Windows 7 from day one was that, whenever I hibernated or send my computer to sleep or standby mode the wireless adapter gets disabled and after resuming Windows it can’t be enabled. Initially as a solution for this what I had to do was restart my computer or without hibernating, sleep or using the standby mode on my computer I had to shut it down which again was a pain and problem.

I was doing some configurations here and there to solve this and BINGO!!!! Found the solution on how to overcome this J

By default Windows 7 enables "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" power management option under the Wireless adapter. All you have to do is remove the check and disable this optionJ.

The following are the steps on how to do this

In the Network and Sharing Center click on Change Adapter Settings link. Right click on the Wireless Adapter and select Properties, click on the Configure button which you will find just under your wireless device name. This will open up a new Window which will have five tabs of which the last one will be Power Management. Uncheck the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” and click Ok. Now you’re good to go!! Now you can hibernate, use the sleep mode or standby mode and your Wireless Network Card will work just fine upon resuming Windows.

Windows Search

Windows Instant search is a very useful feature that comes with windows and also with some applications such as Outlook and OneNote. it really saves a lot of time when searching. Those days when we want to search for a while it takes awhile and the results come up with nothing. then we narrow down the search criteria and search again. but now with the instant search, we don't have to wait any more. while we type indexing service will search and show the results. that’s why its called “Instant Search”. i use the instant search feature frequently on outlook to locate my emails. sometimes i use the instant search which is now embedded to Widows explorer to find files. yesterday i did a search on my Windows 7 to find a document, and i was amazed it was able to read the contents inside the files as well. but this is not a unique feature of Windows 7. it’s just that i haven't noticed that something is possible on Windows Vista. Vista also has the same capability but the indexing service has to be turned on. so finally i learned that it’s possible to search within the files through Windows Search. my next question was, why can’t i search within PDF and OneNote. Most of the articles that i have are on OneNote and PDF. but searching within those two file formats are not enabled by default. to enable it, you need to download something called an “ifilter” in other words indexing filter. ifilter works as a plugging for Windows Search and Windows Desktop Search to index content within a document.

initially i thought it’s not possible to index content within PDF and OneNote documents. but then i did a research and found that there are pluggings that we can use to enhance the capabilities of Windows Search.

so i downloaded the Microsoft ifilter which supports indexing contents for the following file formats

.docx, .docm, .pptx, .pptm, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .zip, .one, .vdx, .vsd, .vss, .vst, .vdx, .vsx, and .vtx.

you can download it from the link below

and also its possible to download the ifilter plugging from Adobe as well for FREE to index PDF documents

Microsoft Windows 7 Beta 1

Microsoft’s new and upcoming desktop operating system Windows 7 beta 1 was released last week.

Now usually when there is a beta product been released and installed on a system you will come across a lot of issues, but its the other way around with this beautiful masterpiece by Microsoft. The looks of Windows 7 just took my breath away.

As soon as i installed the product i noticed that its speeder than Windows Vista and the CPU usage and memory management is completely mind-blowing comparatively to Vista. The beta 1 installation went smoothly and ended successfully, i even tried an upgrade from Windows Vista ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate and it went fine.

One of the main highlight of Windows 7 is the new and improved taskbar where you can move your cursor on top of the program which are opened and minimized and have a live preview. The side bar in Windows vista is not there in Windows 7 but the gadgets are available for you to have anywhere on your desktop :)

To experience Windows 7 fully you will need a Tablet PC or an interactive touch screen, this is to experience the new Windows Touch feature which is introduced in Windows 7. As for system requirements a computer which can run Windows Vista can run Windows 7 more efficiently.

Most importantly the Windows Easy Transfer (WET) can be done from Windows Vista to Windows 7 so no need to worry on manual backups before you upgrade or migrate.

Microsoft Windows 7 Beta 1 can be downloaded as an ISO file from the following link

I know what you are thinking :)Download, Install and Experience the world with a whole new WINDOW!!!

Windows Vista SP1 includes reporting of Installed System Memory (RAM)

Hi Guys;

Windows Vista with SP1 reports how much physical memory installed on your computer. All other versions of operating systems before Windows Vista Service SP1 displays how much memory available to the operating system. This change in Windows Vista SP1 is a reporting change only.

You will see this reporting change in the following locations:

  • The RAM value in the Welcome Center.
  • The Memory value at the bottom of the My Computer windows.
  • The Memory (RAM) value in the System Properties windows.
  • The Total amount of system memory value of the View and Print Details page of the Performance Information and Tools item in Control Panel.

Additionally, the System Information tool (Msinfo32.exe) now displays the following entries on the System Summary page:

  • Installed Physical Memory (RAM)
  • Total Physical Memory
  • Available Physical Memory

The installation of Windows Vista SP1 will not change the reporting in the following diagnostic tools:

  • The Performance tab in Task Manager
  • WinVer
  • DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DXDiag.exe)
